why is the bottom not 11 plus X because you don't know what he got in the thrid game?

Great question! The reason is because the total 'n' is known. We know he played a total of 11 games.

In example 1 the reason we had a variable in that part was because a part of 'n' was
Missing. We didn't know the total number of students.
