why the set of sigma notation looks so difficult ?

Are you saying it only looks difficult? Or it is difficult? Were you able to understand the concept behind sigma?

The sigma notation is easy to understand but the only difficulty is alternating the signs from postive to negative.

Sarafina,
Basically to get the signs to alternate you have to multiply by (-1)^n.
Think about it:
(-1)^1= -1
(-1)^2= +1
(-1)^3= -1
(-1)^4= +1

and the pattern will just repeat.

Yes, some summations may be performed on arithmetic or geometric sequences but this need not always be the case.

I understand what were doing but I'm just confused on how we're substituting, like example 2 confused me with all those exponents and the negatives and positives

Have you tried replaying example 2 and watching it again? Try it, it may help. If not we will look into it more tomorrow.
