Suppose you are looking for a line that is perpendicular to a given line. The slope of the perpendicular line is the negative reciprocal of the given line.
So what is the negative reciprocal?
The negative reciprocal of a number is -1/n.
Here are some examples of negative reciprocals:
-3/4 and 4/3
1/2 and -2
4 and -1/4
So how do you get the negative reciprocal?
1. If you are looking for the negative reciprocal of a whole number, turn it into a fraction (by putting over one). If you are looking for the negative reciprocal of a fraction, go to step 2.
2. Flip the fraction and change the sign.
